Global Nutrition Observatory for Medical Nutrition Education (GNOME): What’s Next

We are pleased to share an update on the Global Nutrition Observatory for Medical Nutrition Education (GNOME), our joint initiative co-led with the NNEdPro Global Institute for Food, Nutrition and Health to strengthen nutrition education for healthcare professionals worldwide.

Building on the momentum of the NEPHELP (Nutrition Education Policy for Health Professionals) project, GNOME has been established as a global observatory and evidence-generation platform supporting knowledge sharing, policy dialogue, and practical strategies to embed nutrition competence within healthcare training systems.

GNOME was formally launched during the NNEdPro Global Food, Nutrition and Health International Summit in December 2025, including a dedicated symposium and collaborative session focused on the future of medical nutrition education. This milestone brought together stakeholders across education, research, and healthcare to support shared priorities and inform the initiative’s next steps.

Healthcare professionals engaged in collaborative learning, illustrating global initiatives to advance medical nutrition education and training.

What GNOME will do next

In 2026 and beyond, GNOME will build a clearer global picture of how nutrition is currently taught across regions, and what is needed to strengthen training for current and future clinicians. The initiative will do this by:

  • Conducting annual surveys across NNEdPro’s global regional networks to assess the state of medical nutrition education

  • Generating actionable evidence to inform curriculum reform and policy change

  • Supporting shared learning and capacity building, so that nutrition competence becomes a practical, measurable priority within healthcare training

  • Developing regional insights and global reporting, including an inaugural Global Observatory Report

A shared commitment, with growing opportunities to support GNOME

PAN International and NNEdPro have made a shared initial commitment to establish GNOME’s foundation and first cycle of activities. As the initiative expands, we welcome partners and institutions who share our vision to explore opportunities to support GNOME’s development and long-term sustainability, including through financial or in-kind contributions that strengthen evidence generation, education, and policy influence.
